Georgetown’s historic neighborhoods are among the most architecturally rich in Central Texas — Victorian-era courthouses, century-old craftsman bungalows, and Queen Anne cottages that have survived generations of Texas weather and still look magnificent. Illuminating these homes is both a privilege and a responsibility. Done well, outdoor lighting enhances a historic home’s character and makes it even more beautiful after dark. Done poorly, it can look jarring and incongruous. Here’s how Majestic Outdoor Lighting approaches historic homes in Georgetown.

The Cardinal Rule: Complement, Don’t Compete

Historic architecture has its own language — proportions, details, and materials that communicate a specific aesthetic. Modern lighting fixtures and contemporary techniques that work beautifully on a clean contemporary home can look completely out of place on a Victorian bungalow. Our first principle for historic homes is: every lighting choice should feel like it belongs.

This means selecting fixtures whose profile and finish complement the period architecture. It means using warm color temperatures (2700K) that evoke the warm incandescent light the home would have had in its early decades. And it means placing fixtures thoughtfully — never overwhelming the architecture with light, but rather using it to gently enhance what’s already there.

Porch and Entry Lighting

The front porch is the face of a historic home. For Georgetown’s Victorian and craftsman properties, we often use low-profile downlights recessed into porch ceilings or period-appropriate wall sconces that complement the home’s original hardware. The goal is a warm, welcoming glow that looks like it’s always been part of the home.

Tree Uplighting for Mature Specimens

Many of Georgetown’s historic homes are blessed with truly magnificent old trees — live oaks with canopies that spread 40 or 50 feet, massive pecans, and grand cedar elms. Uplighting these trees is one of the most beautiful things we do in historic neighborhoods. A well-aimed fixture at the base of a century-old live oak creates a stunning focal point that celebrates the tree’s grandeur.
