One of the most common questions we hear from Austin homeowners considering landscape lighting is: “How long will this last?” It’s a great question — and the honest answer depends enormously on the quality of the system installed. Here’s a realistic guide to the lifespan of outdoor lighting components.
LED Bulbs: 25,000–50,000 Hours
Modern LED lamps rated for landscape lighting use are extraordinarily long-lived. At 8 hours per night, a 25,000-hour LED will last over 8 years before replacement. Quality LEDs from reputable manufacturers routinely exceed rated life. In our experience, LED failures in quality systems are rare and usually related to other issues (moisture intrusion, voltage irregularities) rather than the LED itself.
Solid Brass Fixtures: 20–30+ Years
A solid brass fixture properly installed in Austin’s climate will last the lifetime of the landscape — and then some. We still service systems we installed over 15 years ago where the original fixtures are performing perfectly. The only maintenance brass fixtures need is occasional cleaning and, eventually, a bulb replacement.
Plastic and Zinc Alloy Fixtures: 2–5 Years
We want to be direct: plastic and low-quality metal fixtures have a short lifespan in Austin’s climate. UV degradation, thermal cycling, and moisture all take their toll quickly. By year three or four, you’re typically looking at cracked housings, failed seals, and corroded connections. This is why fixture quality is the most important decision in any landscape lighting project.
Transformers: 10–20 Years
Quality commercial-grade transformers last 10–20 years with proper installation and protection. Cheaper transformers, particularly those left exposed to weather without proper enclosures, fail much sooner. We always install transformers in protected, accessible locations.
Wire and Connectors: 20+ Years
Properly buried direct-burial wire with waterproof connectors should last 20+ years without issue. The key is proper burial depth (6+ inches), quality connectors, and avoiding routes that will be disturbed by future landscaping work.
