Every outdoor lighting system eventually reaches a crossroads: do you repair the issues you’re experiencing, or is it time to replace the whole thing? This is one of the most common questions we hear from Austin homeowners who have older systems. The answer depends on several factors — including fixture material, system age, and the nature of the problems you’re experiencing. Here’s how we think through it.
If You Have Solid Brass Fixtures: Almost Always Repair
If your system was installed with solid brass or copper fixtures, those fixtures are almost certainly worth keeping regardless of age. A well-maintained solid brass fixture can last 30+ years, and the fixtures themselves are often the most valuable component of the system. In this case, repair and upgrade — replace an aging transformer with a modern smart unit, re-run any compromised wire, and update lamps to current LED technology — rather than a full replacement.
If You Have Aluminum or Composite Fixtures: Evaluate Carefully
If your existing fixtures are aluminum or composite and are more than 5–7 years old, you may be throwing good money after bad with repairs. Once aluminum begins to corrode significantly, further deterioration is inevitable. The connections become unreliable, the housings crack, and the fixtures stop seating lamps properly. In this case, a complete replacement with solid brass fixtures is often the better long-term investment — you’ll spend more now but won’t be dealing with the same issues again in 3–4 years.
The Transformer Question
Transformers typically have a 10–15 year service life. If your transformer is aging, it’s often worth proactively replacing it with a modern smart transformer — even if it’s still functioning. The upgrade gives you app control, better voltage regulation, and the reliability of a new unit, typically for $400–$800 including installation.
